Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Naro Moru Gate and Mountain Camp

Depart Nairobi and travel toward the Naro Moru side of Mount Kenya. After registration and a pre-trek briefing, begin the mountain approach through the forest zone. The first day is designed to introduce you gradually to the mountain environment while beginning the ascent toward the higher camps. Overnight at the designated mountain camp.

Day 2

Mountain Camp to Mackinder’s Valley

Continue the ascent through the changing vegetation zones of Mount Kenya, moving from forest into open moorland and higher alpine terrain. The landscape becomes more dramatic as the trail approaches the upper mountain. Maintain a steady pace and allow time for acclimatization before reaching the overnight camp in the Mackinder’s Valley area.

Day 3

Mackinder’s Valley Acclimatization and Mountain Exploration

Spend additional time at altitude to support acclimatization before the summit attempt. The day allows for a controlled exploration of the surrounding high-altitude landscape, with views toward Mount Kenya’s main peaks and distinctive alpine formations. The exact activity and walking distance can be adjusted according to weather and the condition of the trekking group.

Day 4

Mackinder’s Valley to Point Lenana and Chogoria Side

Begin the summit section in the early hours with the objective of reaching Point Lenana, the trekking summit of Mount Kenya, around sunrise. After the summit experience, descend from the high mountain toward the Chogoria side. This is a demanding day combining an early summit attempt with a substantial descent. Progress remains subject to weather, trail and individual mountain conditions.

Day 5

Chogoria Side to Lower Mountain Camp

Continue descending through the Chogoria side of Mount Kenya, experiencing the changing landscape as the altitude decreases. The route provides a contrasting perspective of the mountain after the high-altitude summit section. Overnight at the designated camp according to the final operational itinerary.

Day 6

Chogoria Gate and Return to Nairobi

Complete the descent toward Chogoria Gate and finish the mountain exit procedures. Meet the transfer vehicle for the journey back toward Nairobi. The expedition concludes with the return transfer after completing the Naro Moru to Chogoria Mount Kenya trekking experience.

When To Go

Best Time to Trek

Mount Kenya can be trekked throughout much of the year, but the generally drier periods are often more comfortable for hiking and offer better trail conditions. January to March and June to October are commonly considered favourable periods. Mountain weather can change quickly, particularly at higher elevations, so conditions should always be considered when planning the expedition.

Prepare For The Mountain

What to Pack

Essential items include sturdy trekking boots with good grip, comfortable trekking clothing, warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a warm hat, gloves, sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Carry a daypack for personal essentials, a reusable water bottle or hydration system, headlamp or torch with spare batteries, personal medication, basic toiletries and a small first-aid kit. A warm sleeping system suitable for high-altitude camping or mountain accommodation is recommended where applicable. Walking poles can also be useful on steep or uneven sections. Pack light while ensuring adequate protection against cold, wind, rain and strong mountain sun, particularly because the trek crosses several altitude and climate zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

How difficult is the 6-day Naro Moru to Chogoria trek?

This is a demanding high-altitude trekking expedition requiring good physical preparation. The route includes sustained climbing, high-altitude terrain, a summit attempt and a substantial descent. The additional acclimatization time helps make the itinerary more gradual, but the trek remains physically demanding.

What is the highest point reached on this trek?

The summit objective is Point Lenana at approximately 4,985 metres above sea level. The summit attempt is subject to weather, trail conditions, altitude-related factors and the condition of the trekking group.

Why does the itinerary include an acclimatization day?

The acclimatization day provides additional time at altitude before the summit attempt. It allows the trekking team to adjust the pace and walking plan according to conditions while giving participants more time to adapt to the mountain environment.

Do I need previous mountain-climbing experience?

Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not essential. Good physical preparation, suitable equipment, sensible pacing and following the guidance of the trekking team are important for the expedition.

When is the best time to trek Mount Kenya?

The generally drier periods of January to March and June to October are commonly considered favourable for trekking. Mountain weather can change quickly, particularly at higher elevations, so conditions should always be considered when planning the expedition.

Will we reach Point Lenana?

The itinerary includes a planned summit attempt on Point Lenana. Reaching the summit depends on weather, trail conditions, altitude-related factors and the individual condition of each trekker.

What happens if weather conditions affect the summit attempt?

Safety takes priority over reaching the summit. If weather or mountain conditions make the summit attempt unsafe, the trekking team may modify the plan or turn back. The final decision is based on the conditions experienced on the mountain.

What should I pack for the Naro Moru to Chogoria trek?

Bring sturdy trekking boots, comfortable trekking clothing, warm layers, waterproof protection, gloves, a warm hat, sun protection, a headlamp, personal medication, toiletries, a reusable water bottle or hydration system and other essential personal equipment. Because the trek crosses different altitude and climate zones, adequate protection against cold, wind and rain is particularly important.
