The Experience

Overview

The 5 Days Chogoria–Sirimon Mount Kenya Trek is designed for travellers who want to experience one of Mount Kenya's most varied mountain routes in a compact expedition. The journey approaches the mountain through the Chogoria side before crossing the high-altitude landscape and descending through the Sirimon route, creating a trek with changing scenery from forest and moorland to the dramatic alpine environment of the upper mountain.

The expedition includes a planned summit attempt on Point Lenana, Mount Kenya's highest trekking summit at approximately 4,985 metres above sea level. The summit section requires an early start and careful pacing as altitude, cold temperatures, weather and trail conditions become increasingly important.

One of the defining features of this route is the contrast between the Chogoria and Sirimon sides of Mount Kenya. The approach allows trekkers to experience areas around Lake Ellis, the Nithi landscape and the high mountain terrain before moving toward the summit zone. The descent through Sirimon provides a different perspective of the mountain as the trail gradually returns toward the forest.

This trek is suitable for travellers who are prepared for several consecutive days of walking and the demands of high-altitude terrain. Previous technical climbing experience is not normally required for the trekking route to Point Lenana, but physical preparation, appropriate equipment and a sensible approach to acclimatisation are important.

Mountain conditions can change rapidly. The final pace, route decisions and summit attempt will therefore always depend on the conditions experienced on the mountain and the guidance of the trekking team. Safety remains the priority throughout the expedition.

When To Go

Best Time to Trek

Mount Kenya can be trekked throughout much of the year, but the generally drier periods are often more comfortable for hiking and offer better trail conditions. January to March and June to October are commonly considered favourable periods. Mountain weather can change quickly, so conditions should always be considered when planning the trek.

Prepare For The Mountain

What to Pack

Essential items include sturdy trekking boots with good grip, comfortable trekking clothing, warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a warm hat, gloves, sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Carry a daypack for personal essentials, a reusable water bottle or hydration system, headlamp or torch with spare batteries, personal medication, basic toiletries and a small first-aid kit. A warm sleeping system suitable for high-altitude camping or mountain accommodation is recommended where applicable. Walking poles can also be useful, particularly on steep or uneven sections. Pack light while ensuring you have adequate protection against cold, wind, rain and strong mountain sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

How difficult is the 5-day Chogoria–Sirimon trek?

This is a moderate to challenging high-altitude mountain trek. The difficulty comes mainly from the length of the walking days, changing terrain and altitude rather than technical climbing. A reasonable level of fitness and preparation is recommended.

What is the highest point reached on this trek?

The summit attempt reaches Point Lenana at approximately 4,985 metres above sea level. The summit section is affected by altitude and early-morning cold, so a steady pace and proper acclimatisation are important.

Do I need previous mountain-climbing experience?

Previous technical climbing experience is not normally required for the trekking route to Point Lenana. However, participants should be comfortable with several hours of walking on uneven and steep mountain terrain and should prepare adequately for a high-altitude trek.

When is the best time to trek Mount Kenya?

The commonly preferred trekking periods are January to March and June to October because these periods often provide more favourable and drier trail conditions. Mountain weather remains variable, however, and conditions can change at any time.

What should I pack for the trek?

Pack sturdy trekking footwear, warm and waterproof clothing, gloves, a warm hat, sun protection, a headlamp or torch, water bottles or a hydration system, personal medication, toiletries and other essential personal items. A detailed packing list should be confirmed during the pre-trek planning process.

Will we reach Point Lenana?

The itinerary includes a planned summit attempt to Point Lenana. Reaching the summit depends on the participant's condition, weather, trail conditions and other mountain safety considerations. The guide will make decisions based on prevailing conditions.

What happens if weather conditions affect the summit attempt?

Mountain safety takes priority. If weather or trail conditions make a planned section unsafe, the guide may adjust the itinerary or summit attempt. Any changes should be discussed with the trekking team based on the conditions experienced on the mountain.

How should I prepare for the trek?

Preparation should include regular walking or hiking, gradually increasing endurance and becoming comfortable with longer days on your feet. It is also useful to practise walking with the footwear and daypack you intend to use during the trek.

Can I enquire about this trek before deciding to travel?

Yes. The website enquiry form can be used to ask about the trek, preferred travel dates, number of travellers, route details and other requirements. The team can then provide information relevant to your proposed trip.
