Samburu National Reserve, located 350 km north of Nairobi in Kenya’s arid Samburu County, is a 165-km2 km2 protected area renowned for its unique, dry landscape, the life-giving Ewaso Ng’iro River, and rare wildlife. It is famously home to the “Samburu Special Five”—the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Somali Ostrich, and Gerenuk—alongside large herds of elephants and predators like leopards and lions.

Here’s a well-balanced 7-night itinerary that works great for most clients and flows smoothly from the mountain to the wild north.
What to Expect
Day 1: Nairobi → Sirimon Gate → Old Moses Camp
● Early pick-up from Nairobi ● Drive to Sirimon Gate (2,650m) ● Hike through montane forest & moorland ● Overnight: Old Moses Camp (3,300m) ● Hiking time: 3–4 hrs
Day 2: Old Moses → Shipton Camp
● Gradual ascent with views of Mackinder Valley ● Excellent acclimatization day ● Overnight: Shipton Camp (4,200m) ● Hiking time: 6–7 hrs
Day 3: Acclimatization / Point Lenana Attempt
● Early morning Point Lenana (4,985m) attempt (optional) ● Explore Hausberg Lakes if not summiting ● Return to Shipton Camp ● Overnight: Shipton Camp
Day 4: Shipton → Mintos → Chogoria → Mountain Lodge
● Scenic traverse via Mintos Hut ● Descend the dramatic Chogoria Route ● Drive to lodge/camp ● Overnight: Chogoria area lodge/camp
Day 5: Chogoria → Samburu National Reserve
● Morning drive north through central Kenya ● Arrive in time for lunch ● Afternoon game drive ● Overnight: Samburu lodge / luxury tented camp
Day 6: Full Day Samburu Safari
● Morning & afternoon game drives ● Spot the Samburu Special Five: ○ Grevy’s zebra ○ Reticulated giraffe ○ Beisa oryx ○ Somali ostrich ○ Gerenuk ● Optional Samburu cultural visit ● Overnight: Samburu
Day 7: Samburu Safari → Nairobi
● Early morning game drive ● Breakfast ● Drive back to Nairobi (or onward to Nanyuki / airport)
